‘Ability to handle difficult situations’; ‘ability to work under pressure’ – are the most common phrases candidates pen down on their CVs. For employers, they also refer being analytical. It is an ability to solve complex problems. In reality, firms rely on people resources who can remain calm in challenging situations. But is it that simple? Not exactly!!!
Actually, problem-solving is a skill pushed up the ladder and left over to strategists /leaders to analyse.
So are your employees’ analytical enough to solve complex problems?
To manager’s relief, recent competition demands all employees to think out of the box. This apply to all employees regardless of their level and experience. Analytical skills can be achieved through experiential learning along with active listening and research practices.
Decision-making is one of the key skills demanded in 2020. Nature of work is getting more independent. The authority to decision making is now scattered on vertical lines over the traditional horizontal ones. People with good decisiveness are valued because they help in making decision thus saving time, effort and resources of a business. Remember decision making is not only about choosing the best alternative, but doing it within the required time, with the available resources and with proper monitoring and coordination.

With good exploitation of information resource, and developing techniques to make smart choices, employee decision making can be achieved.
The popular buzzword of this decade ‘culture’ has sought an increased attention. Dr. Geert Hoftsede, one of the greatest pioneers in culture studies, states that culture exist not only at national levels, but at organizational level. And from my experience cultural difference exist even at individual levels. Poor cultural-fit can have disengaged employees leading to declining output. While, it is hard to define cultural-fit within few lines, managers can try evaluating how well individual employee goals and organizational objectives aligned are to determine the cultural fit.
Are your employees fitting well with your company culture?
Cultural-fit is a healthy recipe, and employees can be involved into the flavours of your work through communication, engagement, feedback and assessments. If you are failing to retain your employees then there is an urgent need to fix it up.
Emotional Intelligence (EI) or emotional quotient (EQ) is the intersection point where corporate goals and employee psychology merge. EI is an individualistic ability of a person to balance emotions. EI impacts an employees’ ability to make decisions and to socialize with others at work. Well-balanced emotions are key to high performances. Needless to say, the amount of stress people go through in current world, often shakes their emotional balance off their equilibrium. Results, are directly evident at their behaviours at work, with peers and in their own performances.
Are your employees perceiving, reasoning, understanding and managing their emotions well?
The extent to which employees are emotionally-balanced is reflected in how-stressed they are and how much of conflict they get in at work. It is time for managers to get cautious if stress and conflicts are reaching the limits.
High – Cognition:
Employees are the knowledge-banks. Unlike money, materials and machine, people resources are rationale, logical and reasoned. Yes, people are cognitive, and by igniting their cognitive sparks, firms can become successful quicker and better than their competitors. A cognitive skill is simply an ability to be quickly adaptive to learning. If you are tactful at learning, processing, and applying knowledge towards better decision making then you are highly cognitive.

Cognition is ‘in-born’, ironically it is a myth. With high-technology, advanced work setting and multi-cultural peers, learning is easy and accessible.
Being self-driven and innovative at what we do is the inventive-quotient of an individual. The nature of work is more or less similar in all firms in similar sectors. However, to define oneself apart, one has to demonstrate innovativeness. Employees are the most valuable assets in a company, and hence a company’s’ reliability on its employees is higher than it is on any other assets. Huge brands like Google, IBM, Toyota and Apple are at apex because of the platforms they provide for their employees to think forward and implement collaborative ideas.
Are your employees Inventive?
Developing an employee work-system and opening up of communication across all channels is a great way to tap individual and collective innovations. Although, the role of leaders is high in this process. Tapping from within is the first step a firm should make if it wants to escalate innovations. Precisely, the ability with which a healthy work place is maintained through harmonized relations among employees is what reconciliation is all about.

It takes a lot of practice on HR/ Leaders and Managers to strike balance between different skills and resources. Inspiring your people to be self-motivated can enable optimum level sound work relationships.
The judgemental capabilities of an employee to compress large information/data into relevant interpretations is very important, especially at the senior level managers. Technology has facilitated data analytics to access large volumes of information; but authenticity and validity of such data is the real challenge. Business leaders are confronted with dilemmas to select only the relevant and most useful pieces of information. This is where their judgemental skills are put to a real test.
